As a Bristol brand and fashion photographer, I’ve been wanting to create something that gives back to the local creative scene - so I’ve started a Community Spotlight series, visiting independent businesses and capturing their spaces.

First stop: That Thing, an indie fashion and lifestyle shop in Stokes Croft/Gloucester Rd.

A Space Full of Personality

That Thing immediately stands out - colourful, playful, and full of character. It’s the kind of shop that pulls you in without trying too hard. Being one of Bristol's oldest independents, you can really find some beautiful items here on stokes croft/ Gloucester Rd.

Inside, it’s a mix of everything you didn’t know you needed: watermelon hair claw clips, bold patterned socks, colourful clothing, mugs, disco balls and small gifts. It feels curated but not overly polished - the kind of place where you can take your time and discover some gems.

Beyond the Shop Floor

While I was photographing the storefront, I spoke to Nina, who works at That Thing, about what’s happening behind the scenes.

Like a lot of independent brands, That Thing doesn’t just exist in one space. They also take part in festival stalls and pop-ups, especially during the summer season - bringing their products to new audiences beyond Bristol.

It’s a reminder that small businesses are constantly adapting and showing up in different ways to keep things moving.

The Reality of Running an Independent Business

Nina also shared that they’ve recently been dealing with shoplifting, something that’s had a real impact on the business.

Challenges like this affect not just stock, but time, energy, and overall sustainability.

Supporting small businesses isn’t just about liking a post - it’s about understanding what they’re up against.

Why This Series Matters

This project is about highlighting the spaces that shape Bristol’s creative identity.

Independent shops like That Thing are what give areas like Stokes Croft/Gloucester Rd their personality. Without them, the city loses part of what makes it feel real.

As a Bristol photographer working across fashion and branding, this is my way of documenting and supporting that - capturing these spaces as they are, and sharing their stories.
